Another Deadly Disease?

Happened in Russia, where complete and truthful information doesn't always come out. Based on the article, I'm not worried it'll be like another COVID disease:

"The case has reportedly prompted health officials to place nearly 200 people under medical observation as a precaution.

Plague is an infectious disease caused by the bacterium Yersinia pestis, which is usually found in small mammals and their fleas. The disease is transmitted among animals by fleas. The deceased was a laboratory technician at the Irkutsk Anti-Plague Institute in Siberia. It remains unclear how the researcher may have contracted the infection.

Some Russian media reports have suggested the woman came into contact with a broken test tube containing the pneumonic plague pathogen, while The Moscow Times reported she became ill after returning from a work trip. Plague is a known disease and is treatable with common antibiotics, especially when treatment starts early. Cases occur naturally in many parts of the world," The State Department official said.

Humans can become infected through unprotected contact with infectious bodily fluids or contaminated materials, or by inhaling respiratory droplets from a person infected with pneumonic plague, according to the World Health Organization

That story has been covered in the foreign press the last week or so. Glad to see that the US press is starting to cover this story.

Laboratories have been producing hazardous agents for years, putting us at risk of widespread harm. Even minor disruptions, such as earthquakes, could destabilize what is currently under control. When will the big one happen?

labs are a double-edged sword. If we didn't produce these hazardous agents we wouldn't be able to develop the defenses for when there is an outbreak.
