@EyeintheSky Yes I support Kroger's even though this is a chain store. My Dad was a truck driver for Kroger`s 32 years.

That building is still standing on Jefferson and the arch is on Farmington road Neal's auto parts.

I remember the grand opening of the store on Jefferson St. At the time that was considered the advanced state of the art grocery store. The manager there was a good friend of my parents. He was sent there from the Sheridan Village store which was a huge money maker for the chain at the time.

Some how, I think there use to be a Kroger store on Prospect in the building where Trefzgers is now. Just for the record there was also John Bee further down on Prospect.

@billybob
Yep, the Winner's Circle (next to Trefzger's) occupies the old Kroger space. There was a Kroger over on McClure, too, behind the old Leo's Flowers. My dad and uncle both managed that one back in the late 50's/early 60's, I think.

@EyeintheSky : Yeah, so I gathered. But who owned it and could they just not compete? (I was never hip on their "T - F - B ME!" commercials.)

@QuispNQuake
From the bygonebrands website:

"In 1956, Ed Thompson opened a small, three aisle grocery store at Knoxville Avenue and Ravine in Peoria, Illinois. By 1966, Thompson Food Basket stores had been added in Peoria at Knoxville and Corrington and at Sheridan and Giles, as well as in the towns of Morton, Sunnyland, Bartonville, Ottawa and Streator. Eventually, three more stores were added in Peoria. The company became known for quality meats and friendly service. At Thompson's, they loved to carry out your groceries to your car. The beloved brand endured until 2001 when the Thompson Food Basket stores were sold or closed. Many thousands of great employees and satisfied customers walked through those doors during its 45 year history."

Decades ago, one of my high school students worked in one of those "posh" carpeted grocery stores in the city where I taught.

She said, "Mrs. QuispnQuake, it's awful! I'm the cashier! Those little old ladies come in and wheel those carts around for HOURS, picking up tons of static electricity from the carpet!"

"Then when they come to check out, the manager expects ME to grab the front of the cart to help them into the aisle! All that built-up charge runs right through ME and I get ELECTROCUTED!!"

"POW!"
