@kraziebill : Found some real fine "red dust" on the baseboard by the front door of the new house..termite inspection found nothing last Sept..I had told my contractor that it looked like brick dust..(the house is made of red brick but has been covered up long ago). ..Had the same termite guy back today to take a look..he told my contractor that I had no termites and agreed that it was probably brick dust..now I was joking about the brick dust..is that really a thing..does anyone know? And how would it get inside the house?

How old is the house?

Yes bricks and mortar can deteriorate with age and weathering.

@Mahkno : I think that part of the house was built in 1900 ..which is old..but the house has been sided for many years..so I can't see the brick..the dust is on the inside baseboard by the front door..the walls are paneling which I just had painted..would there be brick along the casing of the front door? So when you open and shut it ..that would cause some type of friction? and then cause the dust???

The pic isn't very clear. You sure its grit and not sawdust? Rubbing it between your fingers should tell you.

Is the mortar between the bricks colored? That pic looks more in line with deteriorating mortar. I have doors in my basement that do that. Old brick can deteriorate and crumble. The general movement of the house can grind away at it. Most of the crumbling brick in my house is due in part to them having been painted 30-50 years ago. I have soft clay bricks in my basement. They need to breath. Paint... paneling don't allow for that.

Carpenter ants can bore through wood too. They can be worse than termites.

@Mahkno : I think the motar is gray..as I said..it's covered up and I can't see it..they painted over the brick that lined the windows..there is a little showing under the house and it looks gray....If it's motar..where would it be coming from..??? Behind the door casing?...I haven't seen any carpenter ants..
