I haven't been to mass at St Mark for quite a while (call me a sinner) so of course the one Sunday I go is the Whiskey City Marathon. Getting there was easy, getting home I felt like a mouse in a maze.

This dummy should have just walked.

If my SIL and daughter didn't have a friend's wedding in Chicago this weekend, I'm betting he would have run the marathon today.

I'll be surprised if the marathon sticks around. This year they only had 800 entries. Sure some of those were 4 person relay teams, so maybe 1000 participants at best.

@kraziebill :

I have heard others say the number of entries was down. How many entries in years past? Also, the Chicago Marathon was yesterday. Has it always been that there was that potential conflict of dates?

@billybob :

2019 - 784
2018 - 988
2017 - 882

This is total entries for all races (relay, half and full marathon)

@billybob : As I recall, the reason they brought a marathon here was to relieve some of the pressure from the Chicago Marathon. But they have changed the route from the original plan, so maybe that is the problem.

@starbound64 : It's still a certified Boston qualifier, but maybe now that it's a 2-lap course, some don't like that.

I know some of the businesses would miss out on some money. Why don't these events get held in the parks. Wouldn't need as many officers and less traffic. Glen Oak is a great park same with Bradley park plenty of running room.

@cjsummers : That was part. They also ran into some issues with some churches and businesses they were impacting. While a couple of downtown churches adjusted their mass schedules and even volunteered by hosting a water station or other assistance, others seemed more bothered.

@cjsummers : unfortunately true. But the COP didn't complain about tax revenue generated by runners from outside city spending money. Alas, I don't have numbers to see if that revenue offset the cost of security. My SIL didn't care for running 2 laps on a previous marathon either. But he accepted it.

held in the parks

@tntrecycling : Believe it or not, it's actually harder to hold larger events like a marathon in a confined space like a park.

Personally, I'd love to see the marathon get stretched out on the Rock Island trail.

@kraziebill : Trust me, runners who do 5k, 10k, Half-marathons or marathons, prefer to run in streets without repeating a lap. More challenging that way.
