Cellphone ban in schools...again?
The Illinois Senate passed the bipartisan plan to institute a statewide school cell phone ban Sunday.
It now heads to the Governor's desk.
So, if he signs it, do I call the police when my students are watching TikTok videos or checking out Peoria.com?
I would give my students a lot of leeway to have phones out if they would just put them away when they are supposed to. I don't have laptops/streams in my room. I'm not going to gather them all to go to the library for a 5 minute need. The kids get a kick out of it when I say "Well, get your phones out and find me a recipe for that" or "what is the origin of Schnitzel" or "why did Escoffier get credit for recipes he didn't create" or "Acid turns green beans Army green. Why?" The list is endless. And it is always a race to see who gets it first or find another answer. The learning is incredible. But then getting the phones back into pockets, backpacks, etc. is a chore.

I'm in favor of a cellphone ban for everyone, everywhere, forever. I raised three daughters. I never even like land lines.

There is absolutely NO NEED for cell phones in schools.
( faculty, yes / students, no )

From writing notes on the arm under your desk or even copying of someone's paper. Having everything you need in one device. It's a shame that while teaching young adults, they don't also teach them to respect the rule of not using certain things during school. It's like having to take a bag of candy away from them, or they'll eat it all.

"Enforcement Rules: The bill strictly prohibits schools from using fines, fees, suspensions, expulsions, or law enforcement/school resource officers to enforce the phone restrictions."
Well, this is about as ********** as it gets. This puts things squarely on the teacher, as usual. What if the 6'3" 300lb offensive lineman doesn't want to put his cellphone away?
Well, I guess I change my syllabus. It doesn't say I can't give you an F and assign extra handwritten research papers on things like wax ester fats as punishment.

@AntiRanchDrssng :
good faith question:
wouldn't all the school rules be put squarely on the teachers? I'm just wondering how this one differs than any of the other rules. If someone cheats on a test, that's squarely on the teachers. Dress code, anyone who sees the infractions (primarily teachers), bullying, etc.

@AntiRanchDrssng : So basically, they can do as they want. Class begins once the phones are in the box. If not, the whole class gets an F.

@AverageSue :
Basically they are making a law that's going to be hard to enforce and appears to have little repercussions for your actions. No surprise.

Make change to grade on phone handling at school. Class activity is to properly place your phone where it belongs. Follow rules apply to grades.
