"I don't know what's going on, but call me when you get here," my brother said over the phone after the first tower was hit.

"Turn on the TV. I don't think you're coming after all," was his sober follow-up phone call as he watched the events unfold from the roof of his Brooklyn apartment building.

We received a voucher for our plane tickets and sold them to a friend who went to the Bahamas.

My brother still lives in NYC and owns an apartment in the lower east side.

We did make it back there a few years after 9/11 - the space was cleared but the memorial wasn't built yet.

I was at my restaurant doing prep work. I heard the phone ring. It was my AM hostess. "Do we need to come in to work today?" Me, being completely oblivious, said "Why the heck wouldn't you?" She starts screaming "The second tower's been hit, the second tower's been hit" Of course the first thing that went through my mind was the twin towers downtown Peoria....
Beginning of the end for my restaurant.
