Headstart Threatened With Changes

The real question is what you want your child to be taught.

This is horrible. People don't realize the value of Headstart. If you also notice, there will be cuts to services to people with disabilities. Everyone knows a child that needs these services. It might be as simple as needing speech therapy as a young chid or as complex as educating a medically- complex needs students in the school setting. These rights have been protected by federal law since the eighties. What is next? I hate to think.

I see the Head Start kids every school day as they are right down the hall from me. One thing I see is the respect these kids are taught and have. I walk down the hall in my Chef uniform and they are waving and saying "Hi, Mr. Chef". They want to high five me. "Whatchya cookin' good?" And one has to ask oneself, where do those manners go when they grow up?
I hope there aren't changes.

AntiRanchDrssng : When I come to the cafe, I love seeing the kids in line, no pushing or shoving, waving at strangers, saying "hi", following directions without complaint and generally being respectful, well behaved kids. Their drawings decorating the walls are cool!

My kid wasn't in Head Start but he was in Early Intervention and was on an IEP from the age of preschool. Now he works with people who have disabilities and/or financial hardships to gain independence. Some may need help to pass the written driver's test. Others it's affordable housing. Others it's job skills and resources. He's constantly afraid of losing his job because of cuts. Even more afraid that some of his clients will be on the streets. One day he came home distraught because an 80 yo woman might not be housed by the end of the weekend. But billionaires exist and even a trillionaire. Cut, cut, cut, cut.........

Need a "Care" emoji! There are so many sad stories out there.
