It's weird. Many customers were reporting their phones in SOS mode (ie no "bars" of signal) while a spouse had coverage.
There are reports of problems on Firstnet (the network used by first responders), so that's not good

So far there's no statement from AT&T leading to speculation of a hack.

The news mentions outages with Verizon and TMobile, too. But I haven't seen any posts of outages on the Tmobile Reddit.

Firstnet

@NoTime : FirstNet is built on the AT&T backbone. I remember sitting in a presentation for FirstNet and it was told that even if the consumer/public side went down completely, the FirstNet side would still work. So, apparently the backbone broke.

I had some hiccups with Verizon a couple months back.... it was because they were upgrading to 5GUW. Have not had much in the way of problems at all since.

Our information said only AT&T customers were affected. 2 coworkers couldn't call or text earlier today because they use AT&T.

I have Verizon, no issues at all.

This is the reason my parents probably still have their landline even though AT&T occasionally try to get them to give it up and get a cell with the number they've had for almost 65 years. Mom: "I hate the cellphone I have now, why would I want another one?"
All of my infrastructure is in place; I wonder if ATT would even issue me landline service if I requested it?

I still have a landline. Old habits die hard.

We'll never give up our landline.

@PeoriaChronicle : I had a landline, and a flip phone until 3 or 4 years ago.

I still somewhat regret getting rid of mine. I was just so fed up and **** off at AT&t and their supposedly upgraded, premium (read dismal and problematic) DSL that I just told them to go F off.

@AntiRanchDrssng :
You were lucky. I had Frontier. I had to file a complaint with the Illinois Commerce Commission to get them to do anything.
