What's going on with the Chase Bank building?

Loading Image...

As you probably know its been shut down due to non functioning sprinklers and fire alarms. I've been told the tenants can enter for no more than 30 minutes at a time to get their belongings. They can currently use the elevators but those are going to be off limits soon.

It doesn't seem the owners, MJ Illinois LLC, of Georgia have much to say about the matter; at least to the press. Chase Bank, according the WCBU "is working on a plan," whatever that means.

I always thought that was about the ugliest building we have downtown, but I hope the owners get off their *** and fix the problems because it would be really ugly sitting empty. That's all we need, an empty building downtown looking for help from the city. Sigh.

Is it the whole building that is shut down or just the ground floor facing Hamilton Blvd.? If so, when did it all shutdown?
If it is the whole building, there have been issues of all kinds for awhile but eventually they got attention and got fixed.

@billybob :
The whole building is closed. I think the FD shut down on the 8th or 9th.

@billybob :
wmbdradio.com/2024/0 2/09/fire-department -closes-riverview-pl aza-building-in
"PEORIA, Ill. - The Peoria Fire Department shut down the Riverview Plaza Building Thursday night in downtown Peoria.

It happened without prior notice to the building's tenants, which include several law firms, Chase Bank and other businesses.

Peoria Fire Chief Shawn Sollberger tells WMBD's "Greg and Dan Show", someone at the Peoria County Courthouse saw water coming from the Riverview Plaza across the street around 4 p.m. Thursday, and called the fire department.

"We were working with their staff to mitigate that…well then we started digging deeper, why did the fire alarm system not trigger that alarm? And, that's where we're at today, the fire alarm system is not compliant, it's not monitoring…basically they get a signal and it's not going anywhere," Sollberger says.

Tenants of the Riverview Plaza Building will be able to retrieve items they need under escort Friday.

"They've been working with Getz (Fire Equipment Company) since June, that's one issue. The second issue is that their sprinkler system for a high rise does not work, so now you have tenants, occupancy in this building…and it bleeds over into the Hamilton Street side as well, so you have 111 Jefferson, 125 Jefferson and then addresses off of Hamilton that tenants cannot be in there today (Friday)," Sollberger says.

How long the Riverview Plaza Building will be closed has not been determined yet."

@skutfarcus :
That explains things. Know a couple of people who were in there very early February to have their taxes done. They noticed that names on many office doors of people that long ago either moved out or have passed away were finally removed from the vacant office doors. Some of those names were a few decades old.

I would imagine that higher ups in Chase are CONSTANTLY on the phone with the landlords. They are NOTORIOUS for staying on top of issues that impact their operations at any location.

A lot of lawyers work in that building and they cannot access their files and libraries as they could before. They only get a small window under escort to visit their offices. The place has no reliable fire protection at the moment.

@Mahkno :
One of those lawyers just signed a 7 year lease and spent big $$ on remodeling.

Did the Peoria Fire Dept do periodic checks and tests of the fire alarm system?

Did the Peoria Fire Dept do periodic checks and tests of the fire alarm system?

@billybob : Nope...which is why we are here.... Not saying this is the fault of the FD, but due to budget cuts and then COVID, routine inspections were stopped.

According to a FD friend, inspections only occur now for new projects or complaints.

I can't believe the amount of water that was leaking from the Jefferson Street side when I was there. Even through what looked like a surveillance camera. Plus saw mold holes on overhang on part of it. The owners MJ stands for "Misson Jesus", a non-profit LLC. One attorney WMBD talked to indicated they had a 2nd office they moved people to. Despite repeated attempts, the building owners have not responded to requests for comment.

Aren't the owners relatively new?

Does anyone remember exactly when they were doing exterior work, especially near the top of the building, in preparation for a sale?

I feel like there is going to be a lot of tenants vacating the place. The entire building is going to need to be treated for mold and repairs to the fire system. Then this property is going to be mired in lawsuits.
