Tax Bill

I just got our total bill today. The best part of moving out of Peoria Illinois to Podunkville, Indiana: sticker shock.

Of course, when we moved, our Peoria home wasn't yet sold. Before selling: UBER- total sticker shock.

@Mahkno : We pay half in Indiana what we paid in Illinois.

Sticker shock comes from it BEING TOO GOOD TO BELIEVE!! HAHA!

And we were blessed to be able to purchase a 3300 sq. ft. home on half an acre, inside town.

There has been a press release that just came out. I will do a copy and paste later. But for now, most, if not all, of the legal and financial minds on the Hill that wrote the tax bill have landed jobs as partners in major law firms or accounting firms. Their jobs will be to help tbe various firms clients navigate the tax bill. On the Hill, they worked for Paul Ryan and republican members of the House Ways and Means Committee. Word is they are billing between $3500.00 to $4000.00 per hour to navigate the tax bill. The swamp just got deeper and thicker and richer.

To jump start the economy when things quiet down it is becoming clearer by the day that some tax deductions that were taken away by Trumps tax bill will be restored. Trump has started to advocate for it. They could even be in future relief bills. In today's conference call with sports league and team executives he mentioned this.
Specifically ,to jump start the restaurant business, the full deduction for meals and entertainment will be restored.

Also, it seems very clear, the full deduction for charitable contributions will probably be restored. Charitable organizations are fearful of being overwhelmed by people seeking help with a major drop in donations given all that has happened.

@craftywoman : Wait until your green sheet is recorded and the Sup of Assessments catches up with the true market value. It's possible, in fact likely, your home was just under-assessed to begin with. It's also possible the former owner had a property tax freeze. Property tax bills are high all throughout the state. That's a fact. I hope this isn't true, but I suspect a rude awakening might be in store for you. I hope I'm wrong. Just be prepared

I know of a house in Woodford County where the sale fell through several weeks ago. Comparatively speaking it had not been on the market quite as long as others. Still it had been awhile. I heard what the real estate taxes were and it totally blew my mind away. Unfortunately I now cannot begin to imagine how long it will be before they sell it. They were planning to move to Florida.

@billybob : Illinois has never met a problem they can't tax away. I think over the next several years, after this pandemic ha come and gone, we will see a mass exodus from blue states and large metro areas.

In the early eighties my parents moved to Indianapolis for two years. They were shocked at the cost of license plates. Even though that is state collected money, I think a municipality will get the funds they want one way or another.

@billybob : Probably what happened was no one ever paid attention to the tax assessment. They just kept paying it without question. People in Illinois need to challenge their tax assessments constantly to keep them reasonable. Especially now. With people leaving the state property values are going down so be sure to appeal them. This is usually done in September. There is only a 30 day window of opportunity per year and it opens when the assessments for the new year are published.

I have friends and family who live in Indiana and they are starting to have some of the same tax expense issues we have in IL.
