I have a very old (read early 1970s) Cerwin Vega H-15 speakers. About a decade ago I replaced both woofers. Now I have a tweeter issue in one. Don't know if it is the tweeter itself or maybe the crossover. I know EDI still *might* exist in Peoria, but of late, I haven't heard good things. Any one know anyone or maybe a business that works on things like this? I do know a guy who rebuilds guitar amps, but that is a side gig off his other two jobs, and it really isn't his "thing" but as a last resort.....

@Prairiegirl : Yeah, Electronics Diversified......EDI. I've had two friends take things there to get repaired and it took forever and they weren't too good at returning phone calls. Makes me a bit nervous. Would you happen to know the owner?

@joepyeweed : A lot of these guys work on musical amps/speakers but not home stereo versions. Don't know why. I can give it a shot. Like the guy I know...he would have to start Googling for parts because he isn't familiar with home stereo speakers. But give him a Marshall stack or a Fender Twin.......

I know nothing about EDI. It is difficult to find repairs for vintage equipment.

@ChefKevin : I'm sure you could find a pair of similar spec'd tweeters online and replace one in each speaker yourself (or was 4 total (2 ea) for this model?). At this point trail and error would be cheaper and faster than paying someone the bench time. You might even just pick up a donor CV on eBay and gut it out for the parts.

I'm worried about crossover problems:
www.audiokarma.org/f orums/index.php?thre ads/cerwin-vega-hed- u-351-opinions.
I picked up a pair of the u321 at a garage sale about 17 years ago. Someone had replaced the 12"sub with an aftermarket. Even so they had always sounded fantastic. A few years ago however, the tweeters started to crackle. Eventually the one side stopped working completely. Just recently I took the tweeters out and tried swapping them. As it turns out both of them work but with a crackle. Now that's got me thinking crossover problems. Has anyone had success with replacing the original crossovers? The only option I found online was to try a vintage used crossover.

@HipKat : The Luxmans are decent, basic 50W x 2ch stereo (8 Ohms) receivers, see www.hifi-classic.net /review/luxman-r-114 -5.html. The Sonance 260s are 2ch x 60W amplifiers rated at 8 Ohms. My guess is that the speakers you have are standard 8 Ohms unless they're from something other than a home system. You could always take a multimeter in resistance "is futile" mode to the + and - terminals of your speakers and measure it, no speaker wires &/or power attached of course Emoticon.

@HipKat : The Sherwood Amp is the heavy hitter at 200W x2ch x8Ohm. You could get by with a decent pair of bookshelf speakers rated at nominal 60W. I think all of your amps and receivers are rated to drive a 4 Ohm speaker load, but I have always stuck to 8 Ohms.

I'd just start using one of the Luxman receivers, that would give you an FM source right out of the gate. DirecTV used to broadcast XM and then switched to MuchMusic. You could line level the outs from your cable box or TV as another listening source if local FM doesn't cut it.

I've also toyed with adding a Logitech Bluetooth Audio Adapter for Bluetooth Streaming my phone to the stereo. It is a pretty inexpensive addon for MP3s, but instead I got carried away with making my own network player with a Raspberry PI for HiRes FLAC files. Seriously, this has been the best addon to my stereo since my 110 disc changer in '98! Google RuneAudio if you want to go down the rabbit hole Emoticon.

Pioneer CT M6R

@HipKat : The 6 cassette changer is unique, audiokarma.org/forum s/index.php?threads/ pioneer-cassette-cha nger-ct-m6r.519 . Too bad it uses an auto-reverse playback mechanism. I have a single deck, auto-reverse Yamaha that is always out of alignment on one side. Pretty much have to use it as a single deck player and well now I don't even have it hooked up.

Very nice hand me down!

There needs to be a pre-amp out, line jack to run a volume controlled and switched source over to the amp for it work normally with the receiver. Some units have them, some did not. I have a true pre-amp that I split to multiple multichannel amps for a hardwired whole house system using 14 gauge UL rated speaker wire. Hardcore audiophiles some times just pair an amp directly with a CD transport and adjust the line level. That would not be me, but some of those tube amps kits look pretty nifty.

The Luxman is a 6+1 disc cartridge type changer, correct. Do some searching, I suspect the transport was made by someone else like Pioneer. Does the single disc portion still work? If so, you've eliminated the actual laser and platter as the problem. If not, sometimes a CD cleaner with a lens brush helps and there's also the Q-Tip trick. My '98 vintage 110 disc player is a jukebox style, it front loads all of the CDs and the player transport moves side to side to pick up the disc. The belt that moved the transport broke and I replaced it myself for less than $10 from a shop that sells VCR and cassette deck parts.

Can you tell I'm still into stereo?
