Chama St. Louis announces candidacy for Peoria mayor
PEORIA - Activist and community organizer Chama St. Louis announced Saturday that she plans to run for Peoria mayor in 2021.

She made the announcement via a Facebook video, in lieu of a formal campaign rally. St. Louis said that tackling poverty and inequality is among her top priorities.

"Taking action to invest in our most disadvantaged neighborhoods does not mean our neighborhoods that are well-off will be neglected," she said in announcing her candidacy. "This is not a question of rich neighborhoods versus poor neighborhoods; it is a question of Peoria versus poverty. We are one family and as we care for each member, our entire family is better off."

She also stated that refocusing on small and startup businesses, helping residents participate more fully in the area economy and changing the approach to crime and violence to address each as public health issues would be among her efforts.

The bad thing about social media is EVERYTHING you post is out there forever. I think some of her rude and negative comments might come back to haunt her.

I'm hoping Andy Diaz jumps in the race. There was talk of it earlier, but haven't heard anything lately.

@kraziebill : Yep. I've read some of them. Poverty and inequality are two of her top priorities. Fair enough. Maybe she will eliminate all the excess(ive) taxes and fees in Peoria since that affects everyone especially those who are living in poverty. This is a Hillary vs. Trump election all over again for me.

I really liked Andre Allen in the 2019 city council run. I would vote for him. I'd also vote for CJ Summers.

Obviously, Chama St. Louis is worthy of serving as mayor for the "San Francisco of the Midwest," but if we'd like to solve problems, then radical changes in thinking - particularly what constitutes "economic development" - must happen. That will be difficult in a state like Illinois.

With my vote we've up to seven now, outside of your immediate family.

If bgbird68 votes twice were at 8.

@cjsummers : I still have your yard sign up in my garage. I'll just cross off City council and write Mayor. Save ya a few bucks. I'll make it classy!!!

I hope she ignites some home and passion into our community. I'm tired of old white guys running the show.

I was staunchly behind the guy who ran against Ardis last time. I'm uncertain about Chama...I feel her heart is in the right place, but not sure about her lack of experience...so, I'd want to see some of her specific ideas. I'd love to have someone to vote for other than Ardis, though. I feel like the mayor and council have too many ties to real estate developers.
